Caden's allergist appointment today went about as well as could be expected. He did not enjoy the skin prick testing, and was quite insistent about putting his shirt back on and getting out that door. Between the blood test, skin test, and real life experience, we determined the following:
Add to diet (tested negative): soy, fish, shellfish, tree nuts (all nuts except peanuts), berries
Still avoiding (tested positive): milk, eggs, wheat, peanuts, corn, barley, rye, oat, flax, beans, melons, and cucumbers.
On the bubble (mixed results): oranges, peas.
A few numbers went slightly up, a few went slightly down. Overall there was very little change to the foods that are still on the avoidance list. The foods that tested negative were either always negative (fish and shellfish) or very low to begin with. The test results for egg are high enough the doctor said that will likely be the last allergen he outgrows. Oranges are on the bubble because he still tests positive for them, but I have introduced small amounts of orange juice to his diet without any reactions. Peas are on the bubble because he tests negative but has mild reactions to them.
A quick note on soy - his test was barely negative, so we do have to do a food challenge before officially claiming victory over this allergy, but I'm optimistic and so is the doctor. Also, soy sauce will still be hit or miss as the number one ingredient in most brands of soy sauce is wheat. But I'm excited to try soy yogurt and soy cheese with Caden.
Overall we are really encouraged by the test results. We go back again in 6 months. In the meantime we can trial the melons and cucumbers.
