We spent the weekend of the 4th in Idaho with Ryan's family. His grandma and aunt have cabins on Blackfoot Reservoir and all the cousins try to make it at least for the fireworks on the 4th. Caden had a blast following his daddy around, swinging, playing in the freezing cold lake water, running up and down the ramp to the boat dock, and overall just enjoying being in a new place.

Ryan's cousin brought up a pool for her little girl Kenedee who is just a few months older than Caden. She warmed up the water, set up the pool, and the kids got in. Kenedee came and went, but Caden played, and played, and played. The combination of water and his new toy that has spinning wheels on it was a real winner.

With the boy's attraction to wheels I'm afraid we're going to be fighting the 'you're too young to drive' battle way too early.

Kiddo loves babies, and his little 2nd cousin Kinder was no exception. When she showed up Friday night he only wanted to play with her and 'uck' (hug) her. He started pointing out all the parts on her face - nose, cheek, ear - but was stopped when he got to eye and poked the poor girl.

Caden doesn't sleep well away from his own bed. He's like his daddy that way. The first night he slept from 8 pm to 2:45 am, then played in mommy's bed until falling back into a fitful sleep from 6:30 to 8 am. That was a long night. The next day we attempted to lull him into a nap via boat ride, but that didn't work either. Friday night found him in mommy's sleeping bag again for most of the night. Saturday afternoon he fell asleep in his car seat after a ride into town for boat parts, and Saturday night he graciously slept in his pack and play from 11:30 pm to 7 am.

Ryan took our red boat up for the weekend. He was hoping to finish up the last few things and have the inaugural launch. He got so close, but the hail storm mentioned later put a stop to his work prematurely. Ryan spent a fair amount of time working on the boat himself, but cousins, uncles, and his dad floated in and out over the course of the two days. On Saturday afternoon it was a bit of a gathering place for the men in the family.

Each year the trip to the lake is a bit of a pseudo-reunion for Ryan since most or all of his Scherbel cousins make an appearance at some point. This year the reunion was a little bigger as many of Rick's cousins and their families got together for the first time since 1990. The food was tasty and plentiful and the chit chat not too awkward, but the highlight for me was a game Ryan's mom organized. Three teams of 6 players each had letters pinned to their shirts front and back. Karen would call out a 4 letter word and the teams would race to spell it. Caden rode on my shoulders for most of the game and seemed to enjoy the bustle as much as the rest of us.

Just as the reunion was winding down the weather took a turn for the worse. The wind kicked up and minutes later the hail started coming down. The storm seemed to last forever and we were slightly worried it would ruin our firework fun. The hail covered the grass in a blanket of white and even accumulated enough that Karen was able to make a small snowman. Dinner was grilled under the protection of the covered patio and after about an hour the storm let up.

Caden seemed enthralled by the fireworks. He particularly liked playing with the sparklers. It was past 10 pm when we finally let him play with the pyrotechnics and he was still pleased enough to let out a good grin.

After a long, fun weekend Caden kicked back and slept the whole drive home.
