Caden made this awesome hat at preschool. Its funny how being in school really makes the holidays come alive so much more for the kids.
We hosted Ryan's parents at our house for dinner, and Karlee and Chris joined us for dessert. I'd made a fair amount of the meal allergy friendly, but all three boys were sick so they didn't eat (or socialize) much. We also had to cancel the service project I had planned for Thanksgiving morning. Oh well, better luck next year.
In trying to drum up a good service project for us, we did end up delivering some canned food to the food bank the day before Thanksgiving. The food bank was sort of a heartbreaking place to be. Every parking space was full and there were people milling about waiting to see if there would be any extra food set out that day. There were people from all walks of life there - young couples, families, single adults, the elderly. It was overpowering to see the intense need in our community. They were filling up shopping carts and loading bags of food into their vehicles. Many of the people there looked broken emotionally. They were at the end of the line and they knew it.
It was a great reminder that there are so many among us who truly need our help. Its often easy to dismiss those on welfare as being lazy, unmotivated, or just poor money managers. I needed to be humbled and reminded that sometimes those seeking aid honestly need it. It was the perfect setting to have a conversation with my boys about compassion and Christlike love.
